An encounter broke out between security forces and militants at a village in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Friday afternoon, police said.
A police official said that a tip-off spurred security forces comprising army, CRPF and police to launch a cordon and search operation in Kanigam village, some 10 kms from Shopian town.
As the forces, the official said, neared a suspected spot, the militants hiding there opened fire on them.
“The forces immediately responded to the firing, triggering an encounter, he added.
The official said that the exchange of fire continued for a few minutes. He said that the operation was paused for the night, however the cordon was tightened to ensure that the militants are not able to flee.
Meanwhile, the internet services have been blocked in the entire district.
