Encounter breaks out in Srinagar

An encounter broke out between militants and security forces in Pantha Chowk area of Srinagar Saturday night, police said at least two militants are trapped.

In a tweet, police said that militants earlier fired upon a CRPF check-point. “During the searches militants again fired upon a joint party of CRPF and police leading to an encounter,” the tweet said.

   

A senior police officer said that at least two militants are trapped in Dobhi Mohalla of Pantha Chowk. “Exchange of fire is going on,” he said adding that reinforcement has arrived at the spot.

Earlier, militants opened fire on a CRPF check-post in Pantha Chowk, however CRPF said none was hurt in the attack.

A senior CRPF officer told the Greater Kashmir that two motorcycle borne militants opened fire on CRPF deployment at the check-post. “They fired upon our men and escaped,” he said adding that nobody suffered injuries.

The officer said that a cordon has been established in the area to track down the attackers.
