Furnish details about toilets on Jhelum banks: HC to Govt

The Jammu and Kashmir High Court on Friday directed the State Government to furnish details about number of toilets along the banks of Jhelum River.

After observing that a report on public toilets along theJhelum was “deficient in details”, a division bench of Chief Justice GitaMittal and Justice Rashid Ali Dar directed the Chief Engineer Irrigation &Flood Control-Kashmir (I&FC) to furnish a complete report about thetoilets. 

   

The court sought the details about the total number oftoilets which were constructed along the banks of the river body, number oftoilets demolished and number of toilets operational on the banks.

The court also directed I&FC Department to place beforeit the details about the toilets proposed to be constructed, including theirlocation to replace the toilets which have been demolished to preventcontamination of Jhelum.

“Such status report shall be filed within four weeks,” thecourt said, listing the case for hearing on September 13.  

The court observed it was imperative for the Government toensure availability of sufficient number of toilets to mitigate problems ofpeople.

Meanwhile, the court asked the State Tourism Department toundertake an exercise of mapping all houseboats in Dal Lake, along with thenames of their owners, on the Department’s website.        

Senior additional advocate general BA Dar sought time toplace a report regarding rehabilitation of Dal dwellers.
