G A Mir’s son, Sofi Yusuf’s wife, Altaf Thakur among losers

The son of JK Congress chief lost the DDC polls to an independent candidate in the Verinag block of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district. The block is part of the Shahabad-Dooru assembly segment considered to be a party stronghold.

JKPCC chief GA Mir has represented the assembly constituency twice. He extensively campaigned for his son, Naseer Mir, who was given the ticket at the cost of the party block president Peer Shahbaz

The disgruntled Shahbaz quit the party and decided to contest independently. A clear divide was evident among the Congress supporters on the polling day with many going with Shahbaz.

Today Shahbaz emerged winner, defeating Naseer by 648 votes.

The Congress, however, did well in two other blocks of the assembly segment, Shahabad-Hillad and Larkipora, where its candidates emerged victorious.

Meanwhile, independent candidate Avtar Singh won against BJP’s Kashmir spokesperson Altaf Thakur. He triumphed getting 3 votes more than Thakur. PAGD candidate Ali Mir of NC came on third slot.

Avtar Singh had contested the last assembly elections on BJP ticket. However, the party gave mandate to Thakur.

The block saw meagre participation of people in the polls with only minority community (Sikhs) turning out to vote in large numbers.

In Dachnipora-Srugufwara block of Anantnag, BJP state vice-president Sofi Yousuf’s wife Rifat Yousuf was the party candidate.

The party leadership including national spokesperson Syed Shahnawaz Hussain extensively campaigned for her.

However, Rifat lost to PAGD candidate Nisar Mir of NC .

The block witnessed a low percentage of voting with PAGD alleging its supporters of being prevented from voting in many villages.

In the two other blocks of assembly segment Pahalgam – Pahalgam and Khowripora – PAGD candidates stole the show.

In Vesu-Qazigund block of Anantnag, BJP leader Rafiq Wana lost.

However, among the prominent who won include Sabahat Gulzar from Shangus block. Sabahat is the daughter of former Congress legislator Gulzar Wani.

Sheikh Javed, who is the PDP district president Anantnag, won Anantnag block on PAGD ticket.

Tasaduk Veeray son of senior PDP leader Abdul Rehman Bhat (Veeray) won from the Bijbehara block.

Waheed u Rehman Parra of PDP, who is under NIA custody in an alleged militancy-related case, won on PAGD ticket from Pulwama-A block.

In a surprise, BJP candidate for Kakpora-A Latief Ahmad emerged as the winner. The block had witnessed a dismal polling percentage.

PDP won most of the seats in Pulwama district; NC and CPI (M) in Kulgam; NC and PDP in Shopian; and NC and Congress in Anantnag.
