Grenade blast near NC meeting venue in Tral

Militants on Tuesday hurled a grenade near the venue of a National Conference (NC) election meeting in southern Tral township of Awantipora police district, officials said.

The grenade was tossed towards the residence of NC leaderMuhammad Ashraf Bhat in Hamami Mohalla of Tral, where the party’s Anantnagparliamentary seat candidate Hasnain Masoodi was addressing workers.

   

The grenade exploded meters away from the venue withoutcausing any loss of life.

Soon after the incident, police and para-military soldiersrushed to the spot and conducted searches.

A senior police officer said the meeting continued evenafter the explosion.

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and NationalConference (NC) vice-president Omar Abdullah on Tuesday thanked PDP presidentMehbooba Mufti after she expressed sorrow over the grenade attack.

“Thank you for your concern. Allah was kind, thankfully theprogramme had concluded & Masoodi Sahib & other colleagues were in anearby home when the grenade fell. Sadly this is the umpteenth time Ashraf& his family have faced this sort of attack in recent years,” Omar tweetedto Mehbooba.

Mehbooba had tweeted: “Very sorry to hear about a grenadeattack on NC’s Anantnag Parliamentary candidate. Relieved to know that he issafe & no other casualties/ damage was reported. Allah sab ko salamatrakhay.”
