Gunmen on Friday shot dead a Personal Security Officer (PSO) of Peoples Democratic Party leader Sajad Mufti and decamped with his service rifle in south Kashmir’s Bijbehara town.
Sajad, who is the paternal cousin of former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, was offering Friday prayers at Baba Naseeb u Din Ghazi (Reh) shrine in Baba Mohala locality of the old town when militants shot at his PSO, standing guard outside.
“The pistol borne militants fired at the cop identified as Farooq Ahmad of Dirpora, Khiram village of Bijbehara multiple times,” said a police official.
He said the militants also ran away with his AK 47 service rifle.
The injured policeman was immediately rushed to sub-district hospital Bijbehara where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
“The slain cop had three bullets in the chest,” a doctor said.
Soon, after the attack, the security forces cordoned off the entire area and launched searches to nab the assailants.
The ancestral home of Mufti’s is also located in the vicinity. This is the second such attack this week in Anantnag district. On Sunday the militants had shot dead a PSO of National Conference leader and former judge Syed Tauqeer Shah at Hillad, Kokernag during a workers meet.
