Heavy cross-border firing in Poonch; 4 injured

Four persons including a journalist were injured in cross-LoC firing in Saujiyan area of Poonch district on Friday. The firing from across the Line of Control in Saujiyan sector has taken place after a gap of around two years.

Officials said the firing between Indian and Pakistani forces started at about 8 a.m, both sides exchanged small arms as well as heavy firearms including high intensity explosive shells.

The firing continued till late evening hours, more than 10 villages close to the LoC were rattled.

A journalist and two women were among four persons injured.

The three injured civilians have been identified as Tasveer Akhter daughter of Mohammad Rashid, Shabina Akhter daughter of Mumtaz Khan and Mohammad Ishaq son of Noor Mohammad, all residents of Chapriyan village of PoonchSaujiyan.

A journalist namely Ramesh Bali associated with Delhi-based media houses was injured after a splinter hit his face.

Shabina Akhter has been referred to GMCH Jammu for specialised treatment and her condition was stated to be critical.

The firing was continuing in the area till late evening.
