Heavy rains in Rajouri, Poonch; 1 killed

Heavy rainfall and flash floods in most of the rivers and streams of Rajouri and Poonch on Wednesday caused damage to life and property.

In Rajouri, a 35-year old man identified as Mohammad Showkat son of Mohammad Hussain resident of Kallar Morha Poonch was killed when his dhok (seasonal house) came under a landslide in the wee hours of Wednesday morning in Kotli village.

   

“He was killed on the spot along with four of his cattle,” an official said.

District Magistrate Rajouri, Mohammad Nazir Sheikh, said that besides one death, eight to ten cattle sheds suffered damage resulting in the death of around 20 cattle while some houses also suffered damages.

“Road from Thanamandi to Surankote via DKG is closed for traffic whereas Rajouri to Darhal road also remained closed for three hours due to flash flood in a local rivulet,” DM Rajouri added.

“Our other main roads that include Jammu-Rajouri highway are open but many link and village level roads are closed due to landslides,” he said.

Poonch district also suffered widespread damage of property with a number of animals perishing.

District Magistrate Poonch, Rahul Yadav, told the Greater Kashmir that around one dozen animals have perished in separate incidents of cattle shed collapse across the district.

He said that two vehicles and a house suffered damage in Mastandara village of Poonch’s Surankote tehsil.
