Home department orders immediate release of 14 PSA detainees from Central Jail

J&K Home Department has revoked PSA detention orders of 14 persons lodged in Central Jail Srinagar and directed their immediate release.

“We have ordered immediate release of 14 persons detainedunder PSA from the Central Jail Srinagar,” a senior Home Department officialtold Greater Kashmir.

   

“Most of them were arrested in August last year,” he said,adding that steps are being taken to decongest the jail in view of deadlycoronavirus outbreak.  The seniorofficial said that more revocation orders are on cards.

Official sources here said that the list of the detaineeswhose detention orders have been revoked has reached to the jail authorities.”They are informing their legal heirs to receive them,” they said.

Official sources said that a list of 27 under-trials hasbeen prepared at the Central Jail. “All these 27 persons,” officials said, “areinvolved in petty crimes, like thefts, etc.”

“They are likely to get interim bail,” sources said.

Home Department officials said that they have also soughtlists of PSA detainees from other jails in J&K. “Their cases will bescrutinised,” they said, adding that most of them will likely be released in aphased manner in the coming days.

As reported by Greater Kashmir, on the directions of SupremeCourt, a high-powered committee has been formed in J&K to examine the casesof undertrials.
