J&K Home Department has revoked PSA detention orders of 14 persons lodged in Central Jail Srinagar and directed their immediate release.
“We have ordered immediate release of 14 persons detained under PSA from the Central Jail Srinagar,” a senior Home Department official told Greater Kashmir.
“Most of them were arrested in August last year,” he said, adding that steps are being taken to decongest the jail in view of deadly coronavirus outbreak. The senior official said that more revocation orders are on cards.
Official sources here said that the list of the detainees whose detention orders have been revoked has reached to the jail authorities. “They are informing their legal heirs to receive them,” they said.
Official sources said that a list of 27 under-trials has been prepared at the Central Jail. “All these 27 persons,” officials said, “are involved in petty crimes, like thefts, etc.”
“They are likely to get interim bail,” sources said.
Home Department officials said that they have also sought lists of PSA detainees from other jails in J&K. “Their cases will be scrutinised,” they said, adding that most of them will likely be released in a phased manner in the coming days.
As reported by Greater Kashmir, on the directions of Supreme Court, a high-powered committee has been formed in J&K to examine the cases of undertrials.
