Jamaat ban: 2 witnesses depose before Tribunal

The Tribunal headed by Justice Chander Shekhar of the Delhi High Court on Wednesday recorded statements of two “protected” witnesses produced by the Central government to defend its decision to ban socio-religious organisation Jamaat-e-Islami in Jammu and Kashmir.    

In its in-camera proceeding held at High Court here, theTribunal recorded statements of the two witnesses.

   

It may be recalled that the Unlawful Activities PreventionTribunal headed by Justice Chander Shekhar of the Delhi High Court has been setup to adjudicate if there exists sufficient cause to ban Jamaat-e-Islami inJ&K.

Additional Solicitor General of India, Sanjay Jain, appearedon behalf of Government of India, while advocate Rajat Kumar and advocateMehrajuddin represented Jamat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir.   “Two protected witnesses were cross examinedby the counsel s representing the Jamaat,” a source privy to the proceedingssaid. 

More witnesses, the source said, would depose on Thursday inthe in-camera proceedings to be held by the Tribunal on 20 and 21 June(Thursday and Friday).

 The Government ofIndia on 6 March 2019 had ordered ban on Jamaat.  The ban order, issued by the Union HomeMinistry, had said: “The Jamaat has been indulging in activities which areprejudicial to internal security and public order and has potential to disruptthe unity and integrity of the country.”
