Militant involved in several attacks killed in Pampore: DGP

Police on Monday said they have killed the longest surviving Lashkar I Toiba militant in Samboora, Pampore, gunfight last night.

Two militants who had escaped from the orchards during the initial exchange of fire were eventually killed in a house, they took shelter in, after a fierce firefight.

Director General of Police Dilbag Singh termed the operation as a major success.

The slain militants were identified as Ajaz Ahmad Reshi of Samboora and Sajad Ahmad Sofi of Padgampora.

“He (Reshi) was working as Over Ground Worker even in 2015 and joined militancy before Burhan Wani, a slain Hizb commander,” DGP told media persons in a press briefing here.

He said the slain militant commander was also part of the EDI Pampore attack in which 8 CRPF men were killed.

“Reshi had transported the LeT men to the attack spot. He also fired at an army party in Kadalbal, Pampore, killing three of its men,” DGP said.

He was involved in a series of other major attacks on security forces.

DGP termed Reshi as a key recruiter.

“Reshi was the one who recruited Tauseef Khanday, Rafeeq Dar and Adil Ahmad, all slain LeT militants,” he said.

DGP said Reshi’s associate Sofi killed along with him yesterday was also recruited and trained by him.

DGP complimented the army’s 50RR and CRPF 110 Battalion for successful operation.

To a question about the recruitment of locals into militancy ranks, DGP said the graph has come down compared to previous years.

“In the past fifteen days or so, we have been able to bring three youth back. This year so far 24 youth who had picked up arms were bought back in cooperation with their families,” he said.
