A militant was killed in a brief gunfight at Hathlangoo area of Sopore Saturday afternoon. A senior police officer said the deceased was identified as Waseem Ahmad Naik son of Abdul Ghani of Udipora, Barsoo in Awantipora area of Pulwama district. He said arms and ammunition were recovered from him.
Earlier, Army’s 22 RR, 179 BN CRPF and SOG of J&K policejointly launched a cordon-and-search operation in Hathlangoo village followingspecific information about the presence of militants inside a residentialhouse.
During the searches and the ensuing gunfight, the militantwas killed.
While the gunfight was on, local residents and the securityforces clashed with each other. The protesters threw stones at the forces whoretaliated with teargas canisters.
