Militants, forces exchange fire during CASO in Kupwara

Amid brief exchange of fire between militants and security forces, cordon and search operation continued in upper reaches of Kandi forests here in north Kashmir on Thursday.

A police official said that the operation was launched inthe woods of Portel Nad and Razdan Nad of Kandi forests following intelligenceinputs about the presence of militants in the area. “After the searches wereintensified brief exchange of fire took place with the contacted militants,however, we lost the contact,” a top police official told Greater Kashmir.

   

He said that after the contact was lost more reinforcementwas rushed to the forest area to intensify the searches, “The operation in theforest area is going on as the area is dense and is in the upper belt of forest,”he said.

He said that the searches are being carried out by a jointteam of Army’s 47 RR, 28 RR, 98BN CRPF and Special Operation Group of Jammu andKashmir Police.

 A local told GreaterKashmir that they heard some gunshots in the morning but from afternoon till5:00pm helicopters were hovering in and around the forests, “There is heavydeployment of security forces and nobody is allowed to move towards theforest,” he added.
