Police constitute SIT to investigate minor girl’s alleged rape

Police have constituted a special investigation team to investigate the alleged rape case of a 3-year-old girl in Bandipora district on May 8.  Police have already arrested the accused.

SSP Bandipora, Rahul Malik said the SIT comprising SDPOSumbal, SHO Sumbal and Senior Prosecuting Officer would investigate into theentire case.

   

He said the police “are treating the accused as major” andthe certificate that was uploaded on the social media regarding the age of theaccused was “fake”.

He appealed to the people to not pay heed to any rumours andhave “faith in the police”.

Meanwhile, a police official said the age of the accusedwill be determined on the basis of “medical test” to be conducted by a team ofsenior doctors. 

It may be mentioned that the police have also arrestedPrincipal, Islamic Educational Institute, Trigam, Sumbal, Ali Mohammad Thokar,who had allegedly issued the DoB of the accused.

An official said that the Principal is under police custodyand was being questioned.

PERPETRATOR WILL BE BROUGHT TO JUSTICE

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, Shahbaz AhmadMirza in tweet said: “The heinous crime of rape of a minor . . . is underinvestigation with full vigour and we assure that perpetrator of the crime willbe brought to justice.”

“We appeal to the public to stay calm and not pay heed toany rumours,” he tweeted.

PROTESTS

Massive protests erupted in various parts of Sumbal in northKashmir’s Bandipora district on the third consecutive day Sunday afternoonagainst the alleged rape.

Witnesses said that people from various localities of Sumbalincluding Shilvat, Dangerpora, Nowgam, Inderkoot, Gadkhod, Shahtulpora, andShadipora took out protest marches demanding exemplary punishment to theperpetrator of the crime.

The protestors blocked Bandipora-Srinagar road nearSumbalbridge disrupting traffic movement for some time. The protestors latermarched towards the main market Sumbal. They also blocked road near Shilvat.

Witnesses said that Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, ShahbazAhmad Mirza and SSP Bandipora, Rahul Malik visited the spot and assured theprotestors that the investigation into the case would be carried out on fasttrack.

The protestors later dispersed off peacefully.

INCIDENT

On the evening of 8 May, a 3-year-old girl was rapedallegedly by his neighbour after luring her to a nearby school. “The accusedhad raped her in the washroom of the school located at a walking distance fromtheir respective houses,” locals said.

They said the victim was rescued by some women after she hadraised her voice, while the accused had fled from the spot.

“The accused is a school dropout,” they said.   

An official said that when the incident happened, a policeteam went to the spot and with the help of locals the accused was arrestedimmediately and taken to police station Sumbal.

He was booked under FIR No. 81/2019 under sections 363, 342and 376 RPC at police station Sumbal.

Next day, locals held protests demanding exemplarypunishment to the accused. The protests continued on the third consecutive dayon Sunday.

On Saturday, students of degree college Sumbal also held aprotest demonstration against the incident and late night protests were held inseveral localities of Sumbal, the same day.

OUTRAGE ON SOCIAL MEDIA

The incident has invited outrage across all social mediaplatforms and across all political circles in the state with the netizens andpoliticians condemning the shameful and dastardly act and demanding punishmentto the accused.   

MOBILE INTERNET SUSPENDED

The mobile internet was suspended Sunday evening in thedistrict to prevent rumour mongering.

A police official said the services were suspended as lot ofpictures, videos and “fake messages” were being shared on various social mediaplatforms.

“To contain rumours we decided to suspend the internetservices,” he said.

SCHOOLS IN SUMBAL TEHSIL TO REMAIN CLOSED

All educational institutions in Sumbal tehsil shall remainclosed on Monday as precautionary measure.

DC Bandipora Shahbaz Ahmad Mirza said that all educational institutions including degree collegeSumbal will remained closed on Monday.
