The border district Poonch in Jammu region is among the two districts of J&K declared as high disaster prone by the Government of India two years ago.
The second district of J&K categorised as high disaster prone is Anantnag.
Officials said that keeping in view the vulnerability of disasters of several kinds in the district, it was declared as high disaster prone two years ago.
“Avalanches, landslides and flash floods are three main disasters which pose risk in the district throughout the year,” said officials.
They said that the district was declared as high disaster prone after assessment of a committee which examined various indexes of the past.
“After being categorised under high disaster prone category, some additional budgetary provision is being issued for the district and we are doing our best on the disaster management front,” Deputy Commissioner Poonch, Rahul Yadav said.
