Rains lash Kashmir, fresh snowfall in upper reaches

The upper reaches in Kashmir experienced fresh snowfall on Friday, while the rains in plains brought temperatures several notches down.

The famous ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’sBaramulla district recorded about two-inch fresh snowfall, said an official.Other places that received snow are: Kongdori, Khilanmarg and Affarwat, thehighest skiing point connected by Gandola Cable Car at Gulmarg.

   

Zojilla Pass, Amarnath Cave, Sonamarg and Gurez alsoreceived fresh snowfall.

Weather in Kashmir turned cold since yesterday evening. Theplains of the valley including Srinagar received rains. The dip in temperatureforced people to put on winter clothes again.

“Srinagar received 6 mm rain, Pahalgam 5.9 mm, Qazigund 9.2mm and Kokernag 4.5 mm,” said a MeT official.

The maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in Srinagarwere 9.1 degree- and 6.1 degree-Celsius respectively.

Meanwhile, Meteorological Department has forecast light tomoderate rain in Jammu and Kashmir over next 24 hours.

The MeT office said there was possibility of isolated lightrain on Saturday but the weather is likely to improve from the afternoon.

“There is possibility of rains in next 24 hours at isolatedplaces across J&K. But the weather will remain mostly cloudy up to 31March,” said Mukhtar Ahmad, Deputy Director Metrological Department.

Sadhna pass closed:

Sadhan Pass was closed on Saturday due to fresh snowfall andlandslides at few places along the road.

Meanwhile, the authorities also issued closure order for theroad up to 14 April 2020 in view of COVID-19 threat.

SDM Karna, Mohiudin Bhat, said that no traffic will beallowed to ply on the road from either side up to 14 April 2020.

He said that only emergency cases will be allowed who haveproper written permission from his office and BMO Tangdar.
