Ramadan, the month of blessings, begins today

The holy month of Ramadan shall commence from Tuesday in J&K.  While confirming the sighting of the moon, J&K’s Grand Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam Sunday announced that the first day of fasting would be observed on 7 May 2019 across Jammu and Kashmir.

He greeted the people on eve of Ramadan today and appealedthem to help the downtrodden and other deserving persons.

   

He said people must reach out to the needy during this monthto seek the blessings of Allah.

He said the Ramadan fasting inculcates self-discipline andspirit of sacrifice among the people. “This month teaches us to show compassionto those who are less fortunate.”

He said this month reminds Muslims to be generous andcharitable. Fasting is one of the five pillars (fundamental religious duties)enshrined under Islam.  There is also aholy night called Laylat al Qadr or “Night of Power,” in this month,during which the Quran were revealed on the Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

The Eid al-Fitr  marksthe end of the fasting month of Ramadan, and is celebrated with religiousfervour.

The fasting hours in various places around the globe vary asper the length of the days. Murmansk in Russia, which has only around threehours of darkness, will see the longest fasting days with 20 hours and 45minutes. While in Ushuaia, Argentina, faithful will be fasting for just 11hours a day. In J&K, this year, the Ramadan comes through the long summerdays with Muslims in Kashmir to fast more than 15 hours a day.
