RD functions end peacefully, mobile internet shut for the day

The Republic Day functions across Jammu and Kashmir passed off peacefully on Tuesday as the authorities had put in place extraordinary security arrangements.

“It was a peaceful day and celebrations were incident-free across J&K,” a senior police officer told the Greater Kashmir.

Officials said that main functions were held at Jammu and Srinagar. In Jammu, Lt Governor Manoj Sinha took salute at the Maulana Azad Stadium, while in Srinagar Advisor Baseer Ahmad Khan took salute at Sher-e-Kashmir Stadium.

Around both the venues extraordinary security arrangements were put in place. Barricades were erected and roads leading to the venues were closed.

At district and tehsil headquarters the functions were held amid tight security, officials said.

The administration shut down the mobile internet services across Kashmir till Tuesday evening. This was the first time in over a decade that voice calls were not barred on Republic Day.

All shops and other business establishments were closed while transport remained off roads across Kashmir on Tuesday.
