Shopian fake encounter: Police probe in final stages

Director General of Police Dilbag Singh on Monday said the investigation into the killing of three Rajouri laborers who were allegedly killed in a stage-managed encounter in Shopian on July 18 was in its final stages.

“SSP Shopian is monitoring the investigation into the case and further details will be shared soon,” the DGP told media persons here.

“Army and police both are investigating the case. The army’s probe will be completed in a few days while police inquiry is also on. We cannot share any details beyond that,” DGP said.

Three families from Rajouri had said that their sons – Abrar Ahmad, Muhammad Ibrar and Imtiyaz Ahmad – working as laborers were killed in fake encounter in Amshipora prompting the army to order an internal probe.

On September 18, the army came up with a statement admitting the three boys were indeed from Rajouri and that during the operation powers under Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) 1990 were exceeded.

On a query regarding the investigation into the killing of Advocate Babar Qadri, the DGP said they have got some vital clues into the case.

“We have already formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and are very close to cracking the case,” he said.

Qadri, a lawyer and an activist, was killed by unidentified gunmen at his residence in Srinagar on September 24.
