Srinagar-Leh highway open for 1-way traffic

The 434-km Srinagar-Leh national highway shall be open for one-way traffic from Sunday. The highway had been opened last week after a five-month long closure.

Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Baseer Ahmed Khan hasordered that the highway shall be open for all types of vehicular movement fromSunday.

   

“It is notified for the information of general publicthat the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri (SSG) road is hereby declared open for alltypes of vehicular traffic with effect from 5 May,” the order reads.

“No vehicle shall be allowed to ply in case of anyadverse report with respect to the conditions of road or avalanche warnings,”the order reads.

The road shall remain open from 10 am to 3 pm for “the timebeing that too during fair weather only.”

“The Beacon, traffic police will deploy sufficient number ofrecovery vans en route to obviate any chances of road blockage due to breakdownof any vehicle,” it reads.

The district authorities have been asked to obtain andconsider weather advisories on daily basis before allowing the trafficmovement. Superintendent, Police Traffic (Rural) Muzafar Ahmed Shah told GreaterKashmir that there will be one-way traffic on the Srinagar-Leh highway for nexttwo weeks “till the road condition improves and the accumulation of the snowgets cleared along the roadsides”.
