The 434-km Srinagar-Leh national highway shall be open for one-way traffic from Sunday. The highway had been opened last week after a five-month long closure.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Baseer Ahmed Khan has ordered that the highway shall be open for all types of vehicular movement from Sunday.
“It is notified for the information of general public that the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri (SSG) road is hereby declared open for all types of vehicular traffic with effect from 5 May,” the order reads.
“No vehicle shall be allowed to ply in case of any adverse report with respect to the conditions of road or avalanche warnings,” the order reads.
The road shall remain open from 10 am to 3 pm for “the time being that too during fair weather only.”
“The Beacon, traffic police will deploy sufficient number of recovery vans en route to obviate any chances of road blockage due to breakdown of any vehicle,” it reads.
The district authorities have been asked to obtain and consider weather advisories on daily basis before allowing the traffic movement. Superintendent, Police Traffic (Rural) Muzafar Ahmed Shah told Greater Kashmir that there will be one-way traffic on the Srinagar-Leh highway for next two weeks “till the road condition improves and the accumulation of the snow gets cleared along the roadsides”.
