Srinagar-Leh road to reopen on Sunday

The 434-km long Srinagar-Leh highway, the only road linking the Ladakh region with rest of Jammu and Kashmir, will reopen on Sunday, said Captain Shubham Sood of Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

The road was closed in December last year. Accumulation ofsnow and snow avalanches delayed the reopening of the road by almost a monththis year.

   

Though the road will open on Sunday, sources said severalvehicles carrying security personnel were given a passage on Friday because ofLok Sabha poll in Ladakh on Monday.

A traffic police official said fresh snow avalanches atabout 10 to 12 places has delayed the re-opening of the highway.

Meanwhile, hundreds of vehicles, the majority of which weretrucks laden with essential commodities, have already reached Gund and Sonamargareas, awaiting the reopening of the road.

Sources said during the past few days, many trucks were allowedtowards Kargil unofficially, which caused a massive jam on the highway.
