Time to harness J&K’s full hydropower potential: Governor

Harnessing full hydropower potential of rivers in Jammu and Kashmir will not only meet the state’s own demand-supply gap, but also augment the energy supply of other states, Governor Satya Pal Malik said on Monday.

Chairing the 74th meeting of the Board of Directors of Jammuand Kashmir State Power Development Corporation (PDC) at Raj Bhavan here,Malik, according to an official spokesman, said that keeping in view the vasthydropower potential of 20,000 MW in the state, projects of 16,475 MW capacityon rivers Chenab (11,283 MW), Jhelum (3,084 MW), Ravi (500 MW), and Indus (1608MW) have already been identified.

   

He stressed that all-out efforts be made to execute theseprojects with “ruthless efficiency” to achieve the desired objectives ofall-round development of the hydropower sector in the state, the spokesmansaid.

While discussing various activities to be taken undercorporate social responsibility (CSR), the Governor directed that funds underthe CSR should be spent judiciously.

Hirdesh Kumar Singh, administrative Secretary to the government, Power Development Department and Managing Director, JKSPDC, gave a presentation on various power projects being implemented by the Corporation. “It was informed that during 2018-19, JKSPDC has generated 5,188.06 million units of energy which gave the revenue of Rs. 1,406.59 crore,” the spokesman said.

The annual accounts of the Corporation for 2014-15 and its revenue budget estimates for 2019-20 were also approved by the Board, which also gave its nod to convening of the Annual General Meetings.
