Top Army commander visits Leh defence institute

Army’s Northern Command Chief Lt Gen Ranbir Singh visited the Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR) in Leh district on Tuesday, a defence spokesman said in a statement.

He said the Lt Gen Singh was by accompanied by his wifeKalpana Singh Dhatt and Lieutenant General Y K Joshi, the General officerCommanding ‘Fire and Fury’ corps.

   

“DIHAR is an agro-animal research and development instituteof the DRDO, located in the high altitude cold desert trans-Himalayan region ofLadakh, which is mandated to fulfill the fresh food requirements of troops inthe sector by developing appropriate technologies,” the spokesman said.

“DIHAR Director Dr O P Chaurasia briefed the three onvarious activities being undertaken by the institute. Over the years, with theeffort of DIHAR, local farmers of Ladakh are able to supply fresh foodrequirement of the Army during the summer season. Now the institute isintensively endeavouring to develop technologies whereby local supply ofvegetables during winter months can be enhanced,” the spokesman added.
