‘Why didn’t Modi remember Vajpyaee formula for five years?’

A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi invoked Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s “Insaniyat, Kashmiriyat and Jamooriyat” formula for resolving Kashmir, National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah on Saturday hit out at him for what he called maintaining “silence” over the long standing issue during past five years of BJP-led government’s rule at the Centre.

“He (Modi) was in power for five years. Why didn’t heremember Vajpayee sahib’s formula all these years? Why didn’t they talk aboutKashmiriyat, Jamhooriyat, Insaniyat all these years?” Dr Farooq asked.

He was speaking to media after addressing a rally in DamhalHanjipora-Noorabad, part of Kulgam district which is scheduled to witness pollsin the second-leg of three-phased election to Anantnag Lok Sabha constituencyon Monday.

Dr Farooq said people of Jammu and Kashmir did not expectModi to implement the Vajpayee’s formula.

The NC president also hit out at BJP for “deliberatelydelaying” state elections, saying “they (BJP) want to rig the polls”.

“Why are they not conducting assembly elections? For surethey (BJP) want to rig or manipulate the exercise,” he said.

Dr Farooq said both India and Pakistan need to shunconfrontational approach and initiate dialogue on Kashmir.

He hit out at BJP for playing “communal politics” to appeaseHindu voters for electoral gains.

“First, they wanted to build Ram temple. But when they couldnot keep their promise, then they started this Balakote operation drama. Theonly message they want to convey to the Hindu voters is that they will breakPakistan just as what Indira Gandhi did by creating Bangladesh. But it is notgoing to yield him anything,” said Dr Farooq, who is MP from Srinagar.
