Celebrating Mathematics

Proceedings of events organized at SP College

      The year, 2012 has been declared National Year of Mathematics by the Government of India, as a tribute to Mathematics wizard, Srinivasa Ramanujan. A variety of activities were organized during the year on the campus as detailed thus: (i) Extension Lecture (ii) Mathematics Quiz (iii) Memorial Lecture (iv) Regional Seminar.
      The Department of Mathematics organized an Extension Lecture on the topic, “Towards Understanding Culture of Mathematics” delivered by Prof. Mohammad Amin Sofi, Department of Mathematics, University of Kashmir, on 26th April, 2012. Prof. Bashir Ahmad Wani, former Principal of the College chaired the session. The faculty of mathematics from Kashmir University, NIT-Srinagar, all the valley colleges and from the host college, research scholars and students were present on the occasion. At the end of the presentation an interactive session proved highly productive as a number of students raised a variety of pertinent issues.1. History of Mathematics 2. Research in Mathematics 3. Mathematical Questions 4. Visual Round. The special feature of the quiz contest was its transaction with due support of I.T. based power point presentation. The questions were explained by the Quiz Referee at the end of every round. Prof. Nazir Ahmad Chirag (Principal, GDC Shopian) performed as Quiz Observer.
       A memorial lecture was organized to pay tribute to Prof. Noor-ud-Din (former Principal S. P. College and former V.C. University of Kashmir- a celebrated mathematician. An eminent SPCian and special guest on the occasion Prof. Nisar Ali, a well-known economist of the state in his lecture illuminated the audience with the professional knowledge of mathematics in relation to economics, statistics and physics, He apprised the audience about the dangerous consequences of Dependency Syndrome the society is confronted with that might emerge beyond a point of no return as a result of lack of work culture in the Valley. Further in his lecture on the theme “J&K Economy” he managed to project the economics as a science of modern times without the knowledge of which society can’t progress and survive.
         The role played by Prof. Noor-ud-bin in the uplift of educational standards in the Valley was highlighted. A well known SPCian (chief guest) Prof. Satish Raina (former Principal of the college) was praised for his constructive role in the development of the college. The dignitaries were apprized of the various developmental activities undertaken by the college for the welfare of students. Prof. Satish Raina in his presidential address felt nostalgic and narrated several anecdotes and shared his experiences and feelings with the audience. On this occasion, Dr.  Ashrafa Jeelani made an announcement to create a corpus of Rs. 5.00 lakhs for Prof. Noor-ud-Din scholarship to be awarded to orphans and students best in mathematics every year. This humble gesture was acknowledged by all and sundry.  The funds have seen deposited in the J&K Bank Ltd.
       The Minister for Higher Education, Labour and Employment  Jenab  Abdul Gani Malik said that Mathematics is extremely important for fulfilling requirements of the society and at the same time science and technology is incomplete without Mathematics. The Minister was speaking at the inaugural on a Seminar organized by the College. The theme of the seminar “Role of Mathematics in Developing Creative Thinking”, was deliberated upon in  two technical sessions, wherein more than 18 papers were presented with different abstractions by the faculty members of the Department of Mathematics, University of Kashmir, NIT, Islamic University of Science and Technology and various degree colleges.
        Jenab A. G. Malik desired that an institute needs to be set up in Srinagar where advanced studies, research and latest trends in mathematics would be discussed upon, thereby popularizing the subject and providing an opportunity to young generation to study mathematics thoroughly. He said that a Committee will be constituted to organize an International Conference in the state in which mathematics experts across the globe would be invited to share their research findings..
        The college will continue to organize such functions for extending maximum benefits to the students of the subject through experts and academics. Participants in the seminar were thanked and organizers of the event felt elated and encouraged. The Minister awarded certificates of participation among the students who had taken part in the events held earlier in the college. The seminar was sponsored by Department of Science and Technology Dr. Naseer Ahmad Shah represented DST and made a significant contribution in the academic input of the seminar.
          The faculty of Mathematics of the college including Prof. Asia Siddiqui (Head), Prof. Khursheed Ahmad Thakur, Prof. Tariq A. Shikari, Dr. Kanwal Jeel Singh deserve all appreciation and encouragement for their sincere efforts towards making all the events very successful and result orientated
The yearlong proceedings culminated in to the following recommendations:
• To motivate students to opt for mathematics and expose them to a variety of activities in order to sharpen their intellect and critical thinking.
• To explore ways  and means for executing new course combinations with a blending of Mathematics viz;
a) Physics – Economics – Mathematics
b) Forensic Chemistry – Forensic Mathematics – Forensic Accounting
c) Actuarial Sciences – Quantitative Techniques – Mathematics
• To establish an advanced Institute of studies and Research in Mathematics;
• To organize annually International Mathematics Conferences;
• To encourage mathematics teachers for participation in seminars sand conferences  and contribution of research papers within and outside the country;
• To avail of facilities of research projects from different funding agencies;
• To enrich the process of teaching – learning – evaluation through creative curriculum design, innovative delivery methodology and fair evaluation mechanism in the Mathematical Sciences.
• To constitute  awards for the best students in mathematics;
• To forge a sustained connectivity in mathematics curriculum at school, college and university level;
• To promote an academic culture for guest lectures, faculty exchange, and student mobility in a cluster of institutions .
