In a significant decision, Jammu and Kashmir government hasincreased 33 postgraduate degree courses (MD/MS) seats in lieu of surrender ofdiploma seats for the academic session 2019-2020 onwards.
As per notification, the decision was taken after ministry ofHealth and Family Welfare; Government of India de-notified 33 diploma seats insix disciplines in GMC, Jammu, vide Medical Council of India Notification No.MCI-23(1)/10(A)/2018-Med./184147 dated 28-02-2019 after recommendation of PGExpert Group (BOG) on the basis of information furnished by the Govt. MedicalCollege, Jammu.
The said 33 diploma seats have been increased into 33postgraduate degree courses (MD/MS) on lieu of surrender of concerned diplomaseats for the academic session 2019-2020 onwards. This was 100% conversion rate in favour ofGMC, Jammu.
Pertinently these enhanced MD- MS seats are on the basis ofrecognized postgraduate teachers in the six disciplines.
Thus, the current pool of MD Obst. & Gynae has increasedfrom 13 to 16, similarly in MD Paediatrics from 6 to 12, MS Orthopedics from 10to 16, Radio-Diagnosis from 3 to 9, MD Anesthesiology from 10 to 16, MDPathology from 7 to 13.
This has increased the total pool of existing postgraduatedegree (MD/MS) courses of GMC, Jammu from 140 to total of 173 now.
Principal, GMC, Jammu Dr. Sunanda Raina confirmed the saidenhancement of PG seats and said that it is the vision of the StateGovernment and in particular our AdvisorK Vijay Kumar and Principal Secretary to Govt. Health & Medical EducationDepartment who supported the said proposal of Govt. Medical College, Jammu andmotivated the institution to go for the said conversion with the vision thatmore qualified human resource as specialist in their respective field shall beproduced on the account of these enhanced PG seats which will go long way tosupport even the upcoming New Medical Colleges and the parent institutions aswell as the Health Department in providing specialized services.
