‘GMC Rajouri ready for 1st batch of students’

The government is all set to kick-start the academic functioning of Government Medical College, Rajouri, as the first session is expected to start in June-July, 2019, officials said.

Sanctioned in 2014, GMC Rajouri was initially supposed to beset up at Gujjar Mandi, near the old district hospital, but the site wasshifted to Maira Kotdhara village, located seven kilometres from Rajouri town.The foundation stone was laid on May 16, 2016 by the then union healthminister, JP Nadda, who was accompanied by former chief minister MehboobaMufti.

   

Highly placed official sources said that the construction inMaira Kotdhara is going on full swing and the authorities decided to start thefirst batch of the college in 2019. For this, work on setting up a make shiftcampus was started inside the new building of Rajouri district hospital.

Pertinently, advisor K Vijay Kumar, has visited the site ofthe makeshift campus in Rajouri four times directed the concerned public worksdepartment (roads and buildings) to ensure that the campus is completed at anearliest.

“A team from medical council of India also visited themakeshift campus on December 22, 2018 and pointed out some loopholes, whichwere in violation of the laid down norms,” sources said, adding, “All theissues have been rectified and the makeshift campus stands complete in allaspects. A compliance report has also been submitted to the MCI.”

On being contacted, principal GMC Rajouri, Dr Zahid Geelani,said that the make shiftcampus has been completed in all aspects and someloopholes pointed out by MCI team in its visit on December 22 stand rectified.

When asked about the compliance report submitted to MCI, hesaid, “Yes, we have submitted a compliance report to MCI and we are expectingthe MCI team to visit in the next few days.”

Sharing details about the makeshift campus, Dr Geelani saidthat it comprises of two lecture rooms, which have a seating capacity of 120students alongwith audio-visual teaching-learning facility, four laboratories,a central library, a dissection hall and faculty rooms. “Four private buildingshave also been hired, which will serve as residential complexes for thefaculty, boys hostel, girls hostel and a nursing hostel,” he said.

He added that 80 percent of the faculty for the collegealready stands appointed.

Replying to a question, he said, “We are all set to startthe first batch of GMC Rajouri with an initial strength of 100 students. Thefirst batch will start in the makeshift campus and we will shift to the mainbuilding once it is completed in March 2020, which is the deadline.”
