Keyhole heart surgery performed at SKIMS

Doctors at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura performed a high-end keyhole heart surgery today, a procedure that has many advantages over the open heart surgery.

A team of doctors from department of cardiovascular thoracic surgery (CVTS) at SKIMS Soura on Monday operated upon a 35 year old patient with heart disease using a high end procedure. Dr GN Lone, head CVTS said that the new procedure was done in an advanced manner, that has been shown to have many advantages over the traditional heart surgeries.

He said, “traditionally, heart surgery involves opening the chest cage by a 20cm long wound under central cardiopulmonary bypass.” “However,” he said, “in this case a small wound called keyhole is created in the right side of the chest through which the entire procedure is performed and the heart defect repaired.”

“A peripheral cardiopulmonary bypass is used instead of central bypass” he said.

Doctors said the patient was removed from ventilator within two hours of the surgery and was doing fine. “This procedure has number of advantages like very small scar, short hospital stay, less blood transfusion and patient’s psychological benefits,” doctors said.

The team that performed the surgery included Prof G.N.Lone , Dr. Farooq Ahmad Ganie, Dr. Nadeem-ul- Nazeer and Dr. Younis.
