The condition of two youth, who were injured in an explosion at Laroo village in southern Kulgam district on Sunday, continues to be critical at Srinagar hospitals, according to doctors. One of them is facing amputation of an arm.
Rahil Dar, 23, from Dedipora had a new lease of life at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences here when he was taken to the tertiary care hospital in a state of shock, having lost a “lot of blood” due to a grievous injury in his left arm. At SKIMS, Dar—a college student—was resuscitated and given multiple units of blood. However, since Sunday evening, doctors—both at SKIMS and SKIMS medical college hospital Bemina—have been desperately trying to save his arm.
“He has already undergone a lengthy surgery during which cardiovascular surgeons put together efforts to repair a major torn blood vessel in his arm,” said a doctor at SKIMS.
“Today the doctors fear that there was little chance to save his arm. We are delaying the decision (to amputate) but we are also concerned about the grave muscle injury turning into sepsis,” medical superintendent SKIMS, Dr Farooq A Jan, said. He said the doctors were closely observing Dar’s arm to assess success of revascularisation. “Let us hope we are able to save his arm but chances are bleak due to grave loss of muscle in the blast,” Jan said.
At least six persons were killed and around two dozen injured in an explosion at a gunfight site in Laroo village following killing of three militants in the encounter there. Among the injured is AuqibShamshad, a 16-year-old student. He was operated upon for seven hours by doctors at the SMHS hospital here on Sunday to try and save his life.
A doctor, who was part of the operating team, said Shamshad had eight perforations in intestines and while they repaired the cuts, they discovered a major tear in iliac vessel, an injury that could prove life-threatening. He had also suffered injuries in his neck and chest. Medical superintendent SMHS hospital DrSaleemTak said Shamshad was admitted to ICU and is being sustained on a ventilator. “He continues to be critical,” he said.
