World Osteoporosis Day celebrated in Block Kandi

On the occasions of “World Osteoporosis Day,” a program chaired by block medical officer Kandi, Dr Iqbal Malik, was organised on Saturday with an aim to raise awareness about the prevention, diagnosis and the treatment of and metabolic bone disease.

Presenting a data, the BMO told that every year about 5 lacs people get fracture which leads to the state of osteoporosis.

   

In India, he said, each woman out of three and each man out of eight are affected by osteoporosis.

“In India, about 10 million fractures are caused by osteoporosis every year and most cases of osteoporosis cases go undiagnosed and untreated. Majority of the undiagnosed population hails from rural areas,” Dr Malik said.

He further said that excessive alcohol use, inadequate calcium intake, vitamin D deficiency, smoking, family history and insufficient exposure to sunlight are some of the causes for bones to weaken.

On concluding the program, Muhammad Ayoub Lone, community health officer (CHC) Kandi said, “We must include phosphorus, calorie, protein, calcium, and vitamin D in our meal and it reduces the possibility of osteoporosis.”
