15,000 bunkers sanctioned for people living along LoC, IB: Centre

The Union Minister of State for Home, G Kishan Reddy said on Thursday the Centre has sanctioned construction of 15000 bunkers along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB) to mitigate hardships faced by the people.

The Minister said 2,753incidents of ceasefire violations were witnessed in J&K this year against2,140 in 2018.

   

In a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha, the ministersaid the government of India has sanctioned construction of 14,460 bunkersalong the LoC and the IB.

“In 2018, at least 2140incidents of ceasefire violations were witnessed in J&K while as 2753 suchincidents were reported up to October 2019,” the minister said, adding 37civilians were killed in ceasefire violations in 2018 while as 15 civiliansdied this year so far in the ceasefire violations in J&K.”

He said since August 5 no person died in police firing duringlaw and order related incidents. “During the same period, three security forcespersonnel and 17 civilians were killed in militancy related incidents while as129 persons got injured,” the Minister said.

He disclosed the infiltration attempts this year were thelowest compared to the previous years. The Minister said in 2018, 328infiltration attempts were registered while as this year 171 such attempts werewitnessed up to October 2019.

“Multi-pronged approach has been adopted by the government ofIndia to contain cross-border infiltration that includes multi-tiereddeployment along the international border, LoC, border fencing improvedintelligence and operational coordination, equipping security forces withadvanced weapons and taking pro-active action against infiltrators,” the replysaid.

The Minister said the Centrehas adopted a policy of zero tolerance towards militancy and security forceswere taking effective and continuous action in countering militancy.

“In 2018, at least 614 militancy related incidents werewitnessed in which 39 civilians were killed. Ninety one security forcespersonnel were killed in 2018 as well,” the MoS Home said.

Hesaid in the ongoing year, up to November 17, at least 594 militancy relatedincidents were registered and 37 civilians were killed. He said 79 securityforces personnel were also killed in the ongoing year till November 17.
