2 Amarnathyatris carry friend’s body on motorcycle

Chanderkote police detained two youth from Punjab on Monday after they found the duo carrying the body of a friend on a motorcycle. The boy had reportedly died after visiting the Amarnath cave shrine, police said. In this connection, Chanderkote police has initiated inquest proceedings under 174 CrPc into the mysterious death of a yatri.

The police said, “A motorcycle, PB11AY 0183, was signaled to stop by a team from Chanderkote Police Station at a check-post at Nashri after the team observed three persons travelling on a motorcycle towards Jammu. The circumstances were suspicious as person sitting in the middle seemed to be motionless.” 

The police further said, “On checking, the person in the middle was found to be dead. He has been identified as 21-year-old Balkar Singh, son of Paramjeet Singh and a resident of Teekhi district Tarantaran in Punjab. The body was taken into custody.” 

Both the riders, Harpreet Singh and Balwinder Singh, residents of Tarantaran in Punjab were also detained for questioning. “In their statement, the duo disclosed that they had come as part of the Amarnathyatra and left Nunwan Base Camp at 2:30 pm on Monday. On reaching Anantnag, their companion complained of a headache and restlessness and died,” the police said. 

After conducting postmortem and legal formalities of the body, it was handed over to the deceased’s relatives, who were summoned by the police.

While talking to Greater Kashmir, SHO Police Station ChanderkoteAbid Shah Bukhari said, “Inquest proceedings under 174 CrPc have been initiated to ascertain the real cause of death and the circumstances which led to his companions trying to transport the body on a motorcycle.” 

“Both the men have been released after their statements were recorded,” the police said.
