3550 persons killed, 32446 injured J&K during 4 years

Jammu, Mar 31: At least 3550 people were killed and 32446 injured while 360 were handicapped in road accidents in Jammu and Kashmir during past four years, state Transport Minister Mangat Ram Sharma told the Legislative Council today.
He said Rs 31.40 lakhs have been distributed as ex-gratia relief to the next of the kins of killed persons, he said.
He said government has received five proposals from five non-governmental organization during the last four years for administering safety awareness programme.
Out of these five, four NGOs were recommended to the ministry of Road, Transport and Highways, Government of India for sanction and release of grant-in-aid in their favour. The Government of India has sanctioned Rs 1,00,000 in respect of four NGOs and released Rs 50,000 each as first instalment through demand draft during 2004-05.
