BGSBU deadlock ends, teachers call off strike

Rajouri, Sep 3: Agitating teachers at the Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) today called off their two week long strike with classes all set to resume on Wednesday.
 Sources told Greater Kashmir that a meeting between the BGSBU Vice- Chancellor, Prof Irshad Ahmed Hamal and the representatives of striking teachers was held Monday evening where all the demands by teachers were discussed.
 They said that during the meeting, the Vice-Chancellor assured the teachers that all if their demands would be implemented within a month.
 Key demands of the striking teaching faculty include implementation of rotation policy, especially for key administrative posts, removal of retired officials from the university, study leave under UGC norms and implementation of one man one post policy.
 Sources added that after the assurance from the Vice-Chancellor promising implementation of demands within one month, BGSBU teachers association held a General Body meeting on Tuesday morning under the chairmanship of association president Dr Ali Asgar Shah.
 “During the meeting majority of teachers decided to call off their strike after the assurance from Vice-Chancellor, although some teachers were of the view that they should carry forward the strike till their demands are addressed. However the teaching fraternity during the GBM, called off their strike and decided to resume their classes from Wednesday”, the sources privy to the meeting said.
 The teachers association also decided to hold a meeting of its General Body in the first week of October, where implementation of their demands will be reviewed. 
 Talking to Greater Kashmir, President of the Association, Dr Ali Asgar Shah confirmed that the General Body of the Association has decided to call off the strike and teachers will resume their classes from Wednesday. “The University Vice-Chancellor has also assured us that all our demands will be implemented within a short period time and after his assurance we are calling off the strike”, he added.
 Meanwhile, BGSBUTA today hailed the Rajouri District administration and Deputy Commissioner Rajouri , who as per them , intervened in the matter and played a key role in breaking the deadlock. Association has also hailed the approach of University Vice – Chancellor, Prof IA Hamal who has assured implementation of all their demands.
 Pertinently, teachers of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University Rajouri were on indefinite strike for past eight days. In order to resolve the deadlock, a four member committee constituted by the university administration, held discussions with the faculty members.
