CARDIAC AWARENESS CAMP: Health-centric urban planning must to check epidemic of chronic diseases: Dr Sushil

In continuation of efforts to make people aware about heart ailments and the precautions required for keeping them away, Dr Sushil Sharma, Head, Department of Cardiology, Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H), Jammu, along with a team of doctors, paramedics and volunteers, today conducted a day-long medical camp at Trikuta Nagar, Jammu.

More than 250 people turned up in the camp who were screened, evaluated, diagnosed and were also given free medicines as per the requirement.

While interacting with people, Dr Sushil stressed upon the need to place health at the centre of urban planning and policy making to reverse the epidemic of chronic diseases.

The camp was organised in collaboration with Shakti Foundation and Bharat Vikas Parishad.

Dr Sushil maintained that recent studies are indicative of the fact that most of the top ten causes of death directly or indirectly are influenced by faulty urban design and planning policies.

Dr Sushil said that chronic non-communicable diseases have multiple factors (genetic, epigenetic, behavioural and environmental).

In this context, Dr Sushil said that conditions that are more frequent in the urban areas such as air pollution, social stress and climate change should be considered as important health determinants and included in the policy making and planning.

He said that green environments are associated with better self-reported health, lower blood pressure, lower psychophysiological stress and lower mortality risks.

Today, we face different health challenges, from chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes, Dr Sushil maintained.

Dr. Dhaneshwar Kapoor, Dr. Kewal Sharma, Dr. Chakshu Mahajan, paramedics and volunteers, Vikas Kumar, Kamal Kishore, Sahil Raina, Amandeep Singh, Rajeev Vohra, Vikas Sabharwal, Gourav Sharma, Rajinder Singh, Bhanu Pratap Singh, Ankush Kohli  and Akshay Kumar offered their services in the camp.
