Jammu, Nov 30: Terming construction of Mughal Road as one of the landmark achievements of Congress-led government, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad Sunday said the re-opening of this historical route has alleviated the hardships of the people of the Pir Panchal and opened new avenues of progress and prosperity.

Addressing public meetings at Gool, Gulabgarh, Surankote, Reasi and Chenani, Azad said since the laying of foundation stone by Dr Manmohan Singh, the then Prime Minister in March 2006, the execution of Mughal Road was taken up on fast-track basis to fulfill the long pending demand of the people of Pir Panchal.

“UPA government’s liberal funding by way of revising the project cost from Rs 225.00 crores to Rs 640.00 crores under Prime Minister’s Reconstruction Programme and Congress-led government’s fast-tracking execution led to the creation of a viable alternate connectivity for the Pir Panchal in a short span of two and a half years”, said Azad adding that no other political party can claim credit of having executed big projects in such an efficient and speedy manner in the State.

Seeking a decisive mandate, Azad said Congress-led government has proven credentials of being the single most pro-development force in the State while others have always believed in raising bogies of various hues and colors to play with the sentiments of the people on religious and regional lines.

Recalling his efforts towards operationalizing the cross-LoC Trade and opening the route of Chakkan da Bagh, Azad said that he personally supervised the construction of infrastructure on the LOC to ensure its completion in the shortest possible time.

He assured a new momentum to the growth and development of the Pir Panchal region if the people of this remote and backward region reposes their confidence and trust in Congress.

Azad said that to provide alternate road connectivity to Chenab Valley, UPA government approved the Sudhamahadev-Marmat Tunnel by undertaking its feasibility study through BRO.

He said Congress-led government will explore construction of tunnel on Mughal Road to make it an all-weather road.

Expressing confidence that Jammu-Srinagar railway line will soon be a reality and Kashmir Valley will be connected with the country via train, Azad said UPA Government’s most shining contribution to the growth and development of J&K State has been this mega railway project which has created enormous employment opportunities for the youth of the State, besides providing cheap and safe mode of transportation.
