Councillor Nasir alleges discrimination with minorities

Nominated councillor Mohammad Nasir today boycotted the meeting called to elect new Chief Executive Councillor for powerful LAHDC-Leh over “discrimination with minority community in Leh and Kargil.”

The Councillor wrote in a letter to Union Home Minister andGovernor Jammu and Kashmir to highlight the plights of minorities in Leh andKargil districts.

   

“LAHDC came into existence after long sacrifices andstruggle of our political veterans irrespective of their political affiliationsbut unfortunately minorities in both Leh and Kargil are deprived fromdevelopment in this democratic setup,” said Mohammad Nasir, a nominated memberof LAHDC, Leh in a letter to Home Minister.

“The present LAHDC setup has 26 elected and 4 nominatedcouncillors but nominated councillors don’t have voting rights, which isagainst democratic setup of the council leadership. Moreover, nominatedcouncillors are deprived of many rights being enjoyed by the electedrepresentatives resulting in our inability to better serve the community onmany developmental fronts and council leadership does not take our demands forcommunity development seriously.

“Though without voting right I have been invited by theadministration for the meeting to elect the new CEC but I prefer to boycottmeeting instead of being present as a mute spectator,” he wrote in the letter.

He further added, “I have also decided to boycott  the council meetings for the next threemonths in protest and will not hesitate to make any sacrifice to protect theinterests of the community in the future.
