Day 5: Curfew relaxed for 2 hours in some Jammu areas

Curfew was relaxed for a couple of hours in several areas of Jammu district on Tuesday.

Curfew was imposed on Friday following massive anti-Pakistan protests and sporadic incidents of violence against the militant attack in Lethpora, Pulwama, which left over 40 CRPF soldiers dead.

   

Deputy commissioner Jammu Rakesh Kumar told Greater Kashmir that curfew was relaxed from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm in the areas that fall in the jurisdiction of Nowabad and Peer Mitha police stations. 

Besides, relaxation was given for two hours (3 pm to 5 pm) in the northern areas under Bus Stand, Bakshi Nagar, Pacca-Danga and Janipur police stations. In southern areas, curfew was relaxed for three-and-a-half hours (3:30 pm – 7 pm) under Gandhi Nagar, Bagh-e-Bahu, Satwari, Channi Himmat, Gangyal and Trikuta Nagar police stations, he said.

Curfew was relaxed for two hours in Gujjar Nagar and Janipur areas, which witnessed stone pelting, arson and vandalism on Friday. 

“No untoward incident was reported from anywhere since Sunday,” said inspector general of police Jammu MK Sinha.

However, restrictions under section 144 CrPC remained imposed to maintain law and order, the DC said, adding that all wine shops and bars would remain closed.

The DC said the decision on whether to continue the curfew would be taken on Wednesday after assessing the situation.

Late Tuesday evening, 2G internet services were restored across Jammu province, except Jammu district, wherein only BSNL broadband continues to function.

Meanwhile, amid curfew, a protest led by Jammu West Assembly Movement president Sunil Dimple was held in New Plot area of the city. They protesters also took out a rally in the Dogra Hall area and raised slogans against Pakistan and militants.

Addressing the protesters, Dimple threatened to intensify protests. He appealed to the central government to initiate stern action against militant organizations. 

The divisional commissioner, Sanjeev Verma, said, “All schools and colleges across Jammu province shall remain closed on Wednesday, as some institutions had already declared a holiday.”

The Jammu University postponed all examinations which were scheduled to be held on February 20 and 21. “All the under and post graduate examinations, CBCS (minor examinations), course work examinations of MPhil and PhD, scheduled to be conducted on February 20 and 21 stand postponed due to unavoidable circumstances.”
