Healthcare becomes casualty for want of funds

The state of the healthcare in Jammu region could be gauged from this: There is only one MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) machine catering to the needs of more than 16 major hospitals in the region.

Surprisingly, there is no CT (Computed Tomography) Scan facility in any of three Emergency Hospitals in the region.

Three Emergency Hospitals were constructed by the government in the accident prone areas of the region, one each at Thathri in Doda district, Banihal in Ramban district and Vijaipur in Samba district.

The hospitals were established to deal with the emergency and accident cases. “But they lack critical equipment to deal with the emergency,” sources in the health department informed.

“The only MRI Machine in Jammu region is at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H), Jammu,” sources said.

All the major hospitals of the region including the GMC, Super Specialty Hospital, SMGS Hospital, the premier maternity and pediatric hospital, Government Hospital Gandhi Nagar, Government Hospital Sarwal, Chest Diseases Hospital and all the ten District Hospitals of the region rely on this MRI Machine.

“The patients advised MRI have to wait for months together for the test,” sources informed.

Head, department of Radiology, GMC, Dr Ganshyam said, “The only MRI Machine of the region is already used beyond its capacity”.

He said, “As against the capacity of 20, we are doing 35 to 40 MRI scans per day”.

Sources said the requirement of two more MRI Machines “has been repeatedly raised with the government during the last 4 years but due to non-availability of funds they are not being procured.”

The cost of MRI Machine ranges between Rs 8-cr to Rs 20-cr, while the cost of CT Scan Machine ranges between Rs 3-cr to Rs 15-cr. The rate depends on the resolution of the machine.

Director Health Services, Jammu, Dr Gurjeet said, “The requirement is there and soon all the Emergency Hospitals will be provided the CT scan facility”.
