Highway reopens, traffic from Jammu to Srinagar today: IGP

The 300-km Srinagar-Jammu highway reopened for traffic after being closed for a day due to heavy snowfall, officials said.

Inspector General of Police (Traffic) Muneer Ahmad Khan said traffic on the highway plied smoothly and around 3500 vehicles crossed the Jawahar Tunnel by evening.

He said traffic will run from Jammu to Srinagar on Thursday.

Meanwhile, snowbound areas of Chenab Valley remained cut off from the rest of the world as snow clearance on interior roads is yet to start, locals said.

People in far-off areas of Chatroo, Thathri, Gandhoo, Bhaderwah Tehsils remained confined to their houses as the administrations failed to clear snow from main roads.

Sources said the power failure in majority of areas due to heavy snowfall left people fuming.

Local SarpanchGhulam Hassan told Greater Kashmir that people are facing immense hardships while the concerned departments are yet to start restoration of power supply and snow clearance.
