Highway widening: Contractor companies dump muck in rivers, authorities in slumber

They alleged the contractor companies and sub contractors are damaging the environment, including water bodies and rivulets by dumping muck into them.

The contractor companies engaged by National Highway Authority of India for upgrading and widening Jammu-Srinagar highway from Nowgam Banihal to Nashri are allegedly taking undue advantage of the present unrest in Kashmir, sources told Greater Kashmir.

They alleged the contractor companies and sub contractors are damaging the environment, including water bodies and rivulets by dumping muck into them.

They said that strangely not a single FIR has been registered against any contractor company or violators so far by the administration.

“Concerned departments like forest fisheries pollution control board irrigation and flood control are in deep slumber. The contractor companies and sub contractors are allegedly taking full advantage of their slackness,” they added.

They alleged that from Banihal to Nashri tippers are dumping muck alongside their worksites in rivulets and rivers which cause massive damage to environment.

Sources said that forest minister a few months back while going to summer capital had seized some JCBs and tippers as he had found them utilizing forest land for dumping muck. He had even directed Police and administration for register FIR against the contractor companies, but his instructions were  ignored.
