Incessant rainfall on the intervening nights of August 12-13 led to a flood like situation in Jammu where the low lying areas suffered massive damages.
Most low lying areas including Durga Nagar, Kernel Colony, Canal Road and Company Bagh locality have been facing serious water logging problems as people were seen in the day clearing off their houses the accumulated sand and muddy water.
The field staff of Jammu Municipal Corporation was also seen cleaning the clogged nallahs due to depositing of city wastes.
“Our staff is on job since morning to cleanse the nallahs congested due to dumping of city wastes. At Excelsior Lane and Manda, our men also removed the debris of roads which were washed away due to heavy rainfall,” Arvind Kotwal, chairman Jammu Municipal Corporation told Greater Kashmir.
Meanwhile, the rainfall continued to wreak havoc in Jammu Rural areas on the second consecutive day today as massive damages on account of private property, roads and electric poles have been reported in the day.
“As per our field staff report, around 25-30 houses have been damaged partially in Bhalwal, Keran and Barn villages. Several power lines have been damaged in Akhnoor, Kot and Bhalwal villages. Some link roads near Excelsior Lane, Manda and Old City were also damaged in the rainfall,” DDC Jammu Ramesh Kumar told Greater Kashmir.
He said that field staff has been asked to assess the losses financially and submit a detailed report to the district administration for compensating people accordingly.
The DDC further said that a flood alert was also issued early Monday morning when the water level in Tawi River crossed the danger mark of 14 feet.
“Early morning, the administration had issued a flood alert as the river was flowing above the danger mark. People living along the river were also evacuated to safer places, but later in the day, the water level receded,” he said.
“Despite the fact that the water level has receded, we’ve advised people living along the river to remain alert during the rainy season,” he added.
