J&K records increasing trend of forest carbon: DG FSI

Jammu and Kashmir has shown an increasing trend of Forest Carbon during the last decade, according to Director General of Forest Survey of India.

The DG FSI, Dr Subash Ashutosh was addressing officers ofthe state’s forest department here at a one-day workshop on E-Greenwatch portalfor digital monitoring of plantation works at the Forest Information Centre.

   

Elaborating on the subject, Dr Ashutosh said that Udhampurof the state has the unique distinction of having the varied number of foresttypes in the country, indicating high biodiversity in a single district.

He highlighted the ongoing cooperation between FSI andJ&K Forest Department for preparation of National Forest Inventory and saidthat the data generated during the exercise will be used to estimateavailability of wood for Wood Based Industries of the state, besidesutilisation in estimating Intended Nationally Determined Contribution.

Speaking on the occasion, Principal Chief Conservator ofForests, Suresh Chugh emphasised on the need of adopting digital approach toconcurrent monitoring of field works to bring transparency and help betterdecision making.

The workshop was attended by senior officers of forestdepartment including P K Singh, Director Soil Conservation, Sameer Bharti, CCFJammu, B. Mohandass, CF, East, Dr. Jitinder Kumar Singh CF, West, M.K. Kumar,Regional Director, Social Forestry Department Jammu, Harmohinder Singh, CF,Working Plan and DFOs of various forest divisions and technicians.
