Kathua rape-n-murder case: Villagers sit on hunger strike for CBI probe

The women of Rassana and adjoining Panchayats in Hiranagar, here on Saturday started a hunger strike to press their demand for transfer the Kathua rape and murder case of an 8-year-old nomad girl to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The women from Rasana, Satura, Daymal, Chan-Morya, Mangtaia, Rajpura and adjoining villages marched towards Kootha Morh on the Jammu-Pathankot highway and staged a sit-in in support of their demand.

   

The hunger strike was started by Trishla Devi and Anjana Sharma both resident of Rassana, Darshna Devi of Dhamyal and Sushma Devi of Satura villages while Sarpanch Kant Kumar and some other men and women also joined them.

“The situation is very grim in our village; at least one male member of every family is in the custody of the crime branch. How the women will manage the affairs of their families when earning members of their family are detained?” Anjana Sharma, who is also on hunger strike said.

“For the past two months, elected leaders and representatives of different political parties have promised us that they will raise our demand with the government. But on the ground they have done nothing,” she said.

 “We have been left with no option but to start a democratic protest,” sarpanch Kant Kumar said.

Another protester said, “We don’t expect justice will be done by one sided CB probe. So we decided to sit on a hunger strike to press our demand for shifting the case to CBI”.
