He said names from all the regions of the state including, Jammu, Kashmir, Rajouri, Poonch, Leh and Kargil came up for discussion during the meeting.

After contesting the Rajya Sabha elections jointly, BhartiyaJanta Party (BJP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are all set to contest the upcoming elections to the Legislative Council on the same pattern.

 

The BJP Core Group has finalized the names of its candidates in a closed door meeting held here today.

 

“Several names were today discussed in the Core Group meeting after which the names of Vibodh Gupta, Ashok Khajuria, Dr Heena Bhatt, Dr DarakshanAndrabi, Farooq Khan, YudhvirSethi, Sunil Sethi, Muhammad Yousuf Sofi, Fayaz Ahmed and Kuldeep Raj Gupta were shortlisted by the Core Group”, one of the members who attended the meeting informed Greater Kashmir.

 

He said names from all the regions of the state including, Jammu, Kashmir, Rajouri, Poonch, Leh and Kargil came up for discussion during the meeting.

 

“After thorough deliberations and considering all factors, these candidates were finalized by the Core Group members”, he informed.  

 

“These names will very soon be forwarded to the party’s Parliamentary Board, which has the final authority and is the highest decision-making body of the party”, he further informed.

 

Meanwhile, reliable sources informed, “Both BJP and the PDP have almost worked out the formula as per which both the parties will contest at least 5 seats each, while one seat may be contested by either one of them”.

 

It may be mentioned that 5 seats from Jammu, 4 from Kashmir, and one seat each from Leh and Kargil are falling vacant.  

 

They informed, “The BJP will contest 1 seat from Kashmir, one from Leh, and the rest of the seats will be from Jammu”. The PDP will contest three seats from Kashmir, two from Jammu and one from Kargil, they informed.  

 

The newly elected MLA and the BJP’s Core Group member, Kavinder Gupta when contacted said, “The party’s priority is to give representation to the unrepresented areas in the Upper House of the State Legislature”.

 

It may be mentioned that it will be for the first time that BJP will have representation in the Upper House from Kashmir.
