Demanding revocation of SRO 202, a group of trainees from Police Training School (PTS) Kathua today staged a protest and boycotted the classes.

The protesters told Greater Kashmir that they feel betrayed by the government.

“In year 2016, when things were not so conducive in Kashmir and government machinery virtually came to a grinding halt, 4000 youths joined Jammu & Kashmir Police as constables. But all our dreams were shattered by SRO 202,” they said.

The SRO 202 of 2015 states that an employee appointed in services will get only basic salary for first five years, which is considered as probation period, which means the appointees, including policemen, have to survive on just Rs 7000-8000 per month, even without any sort of increment.

“We had to face lot of criticism in society for joining police, even our families were not willing to sent us for training because we are still facing life threats from militant outfits and social boycott from people,” a trainee told Greater Kashmir.

“Instead of rewarding us, present government cut our salaries, we are being paid only Rs 7000 a month, with this marginal salary we do not see any future in police force,” he added.

“It’s not easy decision for us to don uniform because we entered in this force last year when Kashmir witnessed a massive uprising after the killing of Hizb commander Burhan Wani,” a trainee from militancy torn south Kashmir said.

“When we were appointed, we were assured that every candidate gets posting within five kilometres of residence but now posting orders came and people were thrown 150 kilometres away from home towns. What will one do with Rs 7000,” they asked.

“Our training has been completed and we have been told that within a week passing out parade will be held. After that all personnel have to join their respective place of posting, so we decided to lodge our protest now,” the trainees said.

“We will not participate in the parade until SRO 202 is not revoked and we get our due salaries,” they said.
