‘Moulana Barkati languishing in jails since 2016 under frivolous charges’

Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik on Wednesday strongly condemned the prolonged incarceration of Moulana Sarjan Barkati.

“Moulana Barkati has been booked under many ridiculous charges and implicated in several fabricated cases. He has been lodged in jails despite the fact that courts have acquitted him of all the charges. In 2016, he was booked under PSA and sent to Kot-Bhalwal Jammu jail. After High Court quashed his PSA, police instead of releasing him booked him under various fabricated charges and till date he is being kept in incarceration under these frivolous charges,” Yasin Malik said in a statement.

He said, “A person who is the only bread earner of a big family has been kept in jails for the past two years and his family is suffering because of this apathy. Recently on the court orders he was released from Central Jail Srinagar but was re-arrested from jail premises by CIK and for the last three days his whereabouts are unknown. Three days back he was released by Shopian court but soon after his release, he was again arrested.”

JKLF chairman has appealed to the ICRC to look into this matter and ensure Moulana Sarjan Barkati’s release.

Meanwhile, Yasin Malik has paid rich tributes to the JKLF slain activists,  Bashir Ahmad Dar alias Salim Malik, Muhammad Maqbool Dar alias military man, Maulana Abdul Gani of Beerwah, Ghulam Muhammad and Abdul Aziz alias fighter  on their anniversary.

Meanwhile, a delegation from Kulgam today visited JKLF office at Srinagar and met with the JKLF chairman, apprising him about the ‘atrocities being inflicted on the residences of the area by the government forces’.   

“Kulgam villages like Badroo, Mudibugh, Yambrach, Kaimoh, Khudwani, Owoora, etc. have become a special target of these forces and nocturnal raids, arrests and vandalizing of properties have become an order of the day,” the JKLF spokesman quoted the delegation as having told the Front chairman.
