12 years on, Hajin awaits drainage completion

Drainage system in Hajin town of Bandipora district is awaiting completion for 12 last years with people facing immense difficulties.

A delegation comprising local residents and members of traders’ federation of the town Tuesday said the work on the drainage in their area was started 12 years ago. “But the work is nowhere near its completion due to the carelessness of the administration.”

The government’s failure to complete the project has annoyed the locals. “The project was started way back in 2007. Prior to that we had drainage from main market to Syed Mohallah but unfortunately some locals blocked that due to which water gets blocked. The department concerned is doing nothing,” the residents told Greater Kashmir.

The blocked water stinks and causes inconvenience to the locals. “I could not offer Fajr (pre-dawn) and Isha (night) prayers at the Masjid because the water stinks a lot and overflows the road polluting the feet of the passersby,” said a local in his seventies.

According to official records, the construction of the drainage system was taken up in 2007 at a cost of Rs 11 crore of which only Rs 2 crore have been spent. The work was undertaken by urban local bodies department.

Residents blamed the Municipal Community Hajin for not maintaining the drains.

It is utter shame that government has failed to restore the damaged drainage system in the area,” said Gowhar Maqbool of Hajin.
