2 killed, 2 wounded in Ramban avalanche

Two persons including a minor girl were killed while two others injured after a snow avalanche hit Trigam village in Khari tehsil of Ramban district on Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

The snow avalanche hit Kawana area at around 3 pm, resulting in the death of 25-year-old Muhammad Rafiq, son of Ghulam Qadir Guth, and 12-year-old Samreena Bano, daughter of Farooq Ahmad.

   

Two women Fatima Begum (30), wife of Margoob Ahmed, and Saja Begum (32), wife of Farooq Ahmed Surukh, were missing after the avalanche but were later rescued by a joint team of the Jammu and Kashmir police and army.

They were evacuated to a local hospital where they are undergoing treatment, a police officer said.

Meanwhile, incessant rains and snowfall triggered landlines in several areas of Jammu province, forcing the administration to suspend traffic on the Batote- Kishtwar highway. Several inbound flights were also delayed due to bad weather at the Jammu airport.

The Vaishno Devi Shrine Board shut chopper and ropeway services for pilgrims due to snowfall and bad weather conditions around the shrine areas, officials said.

Meanwhile, the building of high school in Kuddhar village of Kastigarh tehsil in Doda district was damaged in a landslide on Monday, a report said.

Rains in lower areas and snowfall in the higher areas continued for the second consecutive day Tuesday in Rajouri and Poonch areas, while two structures were also partially damaged.
