Two militants were killed and three soldiers were injured in an eight-hour-long gunfight in Kundalan village of Shopian district on Tuesday. A teenage boy was also killed in firing by government forces in the area and at least 130 civilians were injured in clashes that erupted after the forces laid siege to the village.

While one of the slain militant has been identified as Sameer Ahmad Sheikh, a resident of Ayend, Rawalpora in Shopian, the identity of the other militant has not been ascertained. He, however, is believed to be a Pakistani national.

The teenage boy, Tamsheel Ahmad Khan, was killed during the clashes that broke out between the forces and the protestors who were trying to distract the forces at some distance from the site of the gunfight.

Khan, 15, a resident of Vehil Chatwatan, had been shot in his head. Doctors at the District Hospital Shopian had referred him to the SMHS Hospital in Srinagar.

Soldiers of army’s 34 RR battalion, CRPF and policemen cordoned off the village after being tipped off about the presence of militants in the area. They zeroed in on a residential house where the militants were hiding and in the ensuing gunfight three soldiers, including a junior commissioned officer, were injured.

The injured soldiers are Rajpal Singh (JCO), Mahindra Kumar and Anil Choudhary.

When the first gun shots broke the morning silence in Kundalan, people rushed toward the gunfight site but were confronted by the forces.

The people then pelted the forces with stones. The forces responded by firing live ammunition into the protesters, killing the boy and injuring as many as 130 civilians.

An official at the District Hospital Shopian said that about 70 people with bullet and pellet injuries were received by 4pm.

"Six persons with bullet injuries and 17 with pellet injuries in one or both the eyes were referred to the SMHS Hospital and Bone and Joints Hospital in Srinagar," he said.

Another official at Primary Health Centre, Harman, said they received 35 people with pellet injuries.

He said that more than 25 injured people were being treated in various Primary Health Centres in Kulgam district.

Two residential houses belonging to Muhammad Yaqoob Parray and Muhammad Maqbool were damaged in heavy firing.

Meanwhile, a complete shutdown was observed in both Shopian and Pulwama districts. Mobile internet services in both the districts remained snapped. Some stone pelting incidents were also reported from Pulwama.

This is the first encounter in Shopian since the Governor took over the reins of state.
